In the Art Studio this is goal #1 – to instill creative confidence in every visitor that walks through the door – no matter what the project is, what medium we are exploring, or what collaborative project we are constructing.

We regularly post new ideas about how to instill creative confidence in children at home and in the classroom.

For those of you out there that do not know, Boston Children’s Museum has an awesome gallery space where we have been showcasing the work of local artists since our renovation in 2007. One of the unique things about our gallery space is our family audience, which can top 2,000 any given day. That is an amazing turn-out for any art space! The thing about our audience is that they most likely are not coming to the Museum to see art. (I am trying to change that!). What this means it that they aren’t anticipating walking into an art space or preparing themselves for the conversation they will have with their children about what they are seeing, or what the art is, or what it means. They just happen upon it. I love watching the discovery, seeing what kids are drawn to, how they decide to interact with the work, what they say, what they don’t say….being a witness to the truly hands-on aspect of the Museum and what this means in an art space. Over Hear and Here: A Centennial Reinvention is showing now in the gallery! Crank Sturgeon is the artist behind this 100 day exhibit.

Our gallery space here at Boston Children’s Museum is a unique art exhibition space in many ways:  the audience (children and adults!);  the sheer number of visitors (600,000 each year!); the hands on element; the location of the space itself (in the middle of everything with no distinguishing signs or features); and it is one of only a handful of exhibit spaces in the museum that changes regularly…just to name a few! Wearable Art

Nick Cave 2Looking back at June in the Art Studio, the theme was Kid’s (BEHIND) the Stage Month.

All month visitors were invited to explore what happens behind the stage and make a mask, design and make a piece of wearable art, and/or make their very own paper bag puppet.   

For me, inspiration comes from everywhere. The wearable art idea came from a visit to the Peabody Essex’s Art Museum to see an exhibit they had of artist and director of the graduate fashion program at School of the Art Institute of Chicago –  Nick Cave. Continue reading

Kid (ART) Power

Looking back on February in the Art Studio

Collaboration, time, space, body.

These were the elements of February’s projects in the studio. 

No one worked alone – each visitor’s actions and decisions affected the whole of each of the projects.  They had to negotiate with each other and the space and decide what to do, where to wrap the yarn, how to attach their paper, where to leave their mark.
